Public Engagement

LSTM is committed to engaging the public about its world-class research, both nationally and internationally, to promote awareness of global health issues and enhance the significance and impact of LSTM’s research with target audiences and to inspire the next generation of scientists. Internationally we aim to approach public engagement in a delicate manner to foster trust, build capacity, and empower communities with LSTM’s latest research developments and interventions. Furthermore, we aim to listen and discuss the challenges faced by communities within resource-poor settings to direct and drive our research.

Public engagement brings many benefits to LSTM, to its staff and students, and to the public. It provides us with an accountability and transparency to our research, and allows us to be relevant and responsive to the needs of the public generating trust within the communities we work with.

LSTM – Past, Present and Future

LSTM has successfully secured a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant to celebrate its 125th Anniversary by creating an extensive programme of activity that offers an opportunity to reflect upon, and engage, audiences with LSTM’s rich heritage and work.

The project aims to increase awareness and engagement in LSTM's past, present and future using the stories of past and present scientists. We will feature the trailblazing women scientists of the early 1900s such as Alwen Evans, to present-day scientists working in the same fields, in Liverpool and globally.

We will show how these early scientists have impacted on LSTM's scientists today, and how this legacy is addressing the major health challenges facing humanity now and in the next 125 years and aim to inspire the next generation of scientists.

Connecting Citizens to Science podcast

If you are interested in how different research methods and disciplinary approaches can be used to co-produce knowledge and solutions to complex challenges in global health, this is the podcast for you.

Swab and Send

Swab and Send is a citizen science and crowdfunding initiative based at LSTM aimed at spreading the word of how important it is to find new antibiotics. Find out more and how you can join the fight against microbial resistance.

LSTM Tours

There are currently no guided tours of LSTM.

We have a number of events taking place for our 125th anniversary and so we will not be running any tours this year. However, please keep an eye out on our webpages, for all events advertised.

STEM Ambassadors

LSTM currently has 40 STEM Ambassadors (including staff and students) who are fully DBS-checked and trained by All About STEM.

These STEM Ambassadors have been involved in a huge range of activities in schools across the North-West region, including giving talks, judging competitions and advising on school science projects, all of which can have an impact on young people’s learning and enjoyment of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). LSTM’s STEM Ambassadors demonstrate the real-world application of STEM subjects and are inspiring role models for young people of all backgrounds, bringing learning and career opportunities to life.
