Governance of SEC
SEC works in close partnership with other parts of LSTM governance structures and reports to LSTM Executive. SEC includes the Head of Estates, who Co-Chairs SEC and oversees sustainability throughout the LSTM Estate, Sustainability Manager, and a representative from each one of these groups: LSTM Executive (SEC Co-Chair), Board of Trustees, IVCC, Human Resources, Technicians Committment, Corporate Communication, Education and Procurement.
Responsibilities of the Committee include:
Report to LSTM Executive on the status of LSTM’s sustainability performance, including its observance of external commitments and obligations.
To recommend for approval strategies, policies, and action plans in support of the LSTM’s environmental sustainability ambitions and commitments, and to review and recommend strategies, policies, plans, procedures, and programs of other committees in connection with environmental sustainability where appropriate.
Provide strategic guidance and advice in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to coordinate efforts to enhance alignment of teaching and learning, research, impact, and institution operations in support of the SDGs, ensuring LSTM meet obligations as a signatory to the UN Global Compact.
Oversee the development and implementation of the LSTM Carbon Management Plan and decarbonisation pathways towards net zero carbon, including the setting, disclosing, and achievement of targets.
Support the development of sustainability communication and engagement activities to promote understanding and catalyse action in the LSTM community (staff and students).
Support the LSTM Green Network (Please add link to LSTM Green Network Page) as a platform to draw together task-finish groups as and when needed to deliver environmental sustainability strategies, policies and action plans, and progress commitments and targets.
Advise on the development and implementation of cultural change programs to embed sustainability in and across all areas of LSTM’s activities.
To lead and deliver on environmental sustainability matters at the institutional level and incorporate sustainability practices into LSTM’s operational performance to ensure that it meets its external obligations.
Facilitate improvements to data collection and sharing processes to enhance the timeliness and quality of environmental sustainability reporting.
Staff and Student Engagement
To ensure that all our new staff and students understand LSTM policies and commitment to environmental sustainability, ‘Sustainability at LSTM’ sessions are included at induction. LSTM hold yearly Staff Awards to acknowledge and celebrate the fantastic contributions of staff across LSTM, both in the UK and around the world. The citizenship award category recognises staff efforts towards the sustainability and environment.
LSTM Green Network
The Green Network is open to all staff and students, who are interested in facilitating new initiatives and helping to raise awareness on the environmental sustainability issues which are important to them. The network provides a platform where like-minded individuals can interact and discuss about environmental sustainability challenges in their work and study, identify ways to resolve those issues effectively through task & finish groups.
The network has access to a budget to support staff and student engagement activities.
