I chose to study the Diploma in Travel Health to enhance my knowledge of the risks that travellers face and learn how to provide advice on staying healthy whilst abroad. The course covered a wide variety of subject areas and followed a structured online teaching format. The written assignments reinforced the content taught within each module with a focus on evidence-based medicine. In my role as coordinating doctor at International SOS, which provides remote medical assistance to clients across the globe, it is essential to have a broad knowledge of diverse environments and their ever-changing health threats.  I now feel well equipped to assist clients prior to, during and following travel and hope to pursue further studies with LSTM in the future.

A course such as this would normally involve regular travel, significant accommodation costs and adding even more time commitment.  The programme had already been set up, well before the pandemic, so it ran very smoothly.

This course has provided me with the confidence to step out of my normal clinical role and provide advice and epidemiological information to allow Defence healthcare staff and Commanders to appreciate the difficulties associated with serving overseas or deploying on military operations, particularly during the pandemic.

The Travel Health Diploma was a valuable learning experience for myself as it challenged my evidence based practice at work. I have been delivering Travel Heath services for 18 years but have never had a formal qualification and learnt new things!.  This course suited me as it was all online and that meant I could study when I wanted. It was split into 4 modules which helped keep everything methodical.    Philippa and Kath (tutors) were very friendly easy to approach and always emailed back promptly and advised us as necessary, I felt very supported by them.  Having contact with students from around the world who were also on the course made it more interesting and you learn from them also. If you have an interest or passion for travel medicine then this the course for you.

Coming from an infectious disease background, it was only natural to apply for this course. The course layout is well thought out, interactive and provides enough time and space for personal development in the subject of travel health.  The staff are extremely helpful, very responsive to your questions and eager to teach. Most of them have many years of experience in travel related health under their belt and this was very evident during the entire duration of the course. This diploma helps you to focus on the essentials of this emerging new specialty but at the same time equip you with enough information to further your knowledge and feel comfortable providing advise to prospective travellers. I would recommend this course to any one willing to expand on their travel health knowledge and those who are managing prospective travellers or returned travellers in their clinics. From personal experience this has helped me to manage travel related questions better and provided opportunities for global networking with other travel medicine experts.

I very much appreciated the Professional Diploma in Travel Health and its online format was perfect for my needs. The tutors were extremely supportive and the written assessments particularly useful to consolidate and enhance learning. Although UK travel health guidelines formed the core of the curriculum, the course and assessments were designed to be appropriate for practitioners from non-UK settings; contributions from other contexts were actively encouraged. I am regularly using the knowledge and skills I learned on this course. This qualification has given me the skills and confidence to make policy change in both of my roles and has enhanced the quality of the travel health advice I give in my practice. The course also developed my skills in reflective practice, which is an essential requirement of my professional regulator.
