This course aims to update you in recent advances in the prevention and management of priority diseases affecting children in low resource settings and equip them to lead improvements in care. The health and well-being of most of the world’s infants and children need to be improved despite limited resources. You will review priority issues in global child health focusing on latest evidence that has informed advances in disease prevention and management. Emphasis is placed on taking a broad view of health linking community interventions through to bedside clinical management and improving health outcomes by improving the quality of health care through better use of the available human and material resources. It is taught through a combination of presentations, seminars, tutorials, case studies of quality improvement initiatives in different settings and on-line clinical case studies benchmarked against IMCI protocols. Course Outline UN Sustainable Development Goals Global Burden of Disease in infants and children Current priorities in global child health: adolescent health, neonatal health, child development/disability Programmatic approaches to improving child health: IMCI including ETAT; EPI Child Rights and equity Basic quality improvement approaches and tools applied to child health in government health service and NGO sectors Skills required to improve care: leadership, presentation skills, quality improvement 10 Academic Credits - Assessments Assessment is a a 2,500 word written report. For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course. The assessment is coming soon. Please note that assessments may change at the discretion of the Directors of Study. All students will be made aware of new assessment details. The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all our students, and students who do not wish to be entered for academic credits will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Entrance RequirementsAcademic requirements: Anyone who works in the fields of international child health would find this course useful.English language requirements: Attending course with Academic Credit:The course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years. Attending course Certificate of Attendance Only:The course is taught in English and in a postgraduate setting. Students whose first language is not English should be aware that to benefit from the course participants should have English language proficiency at the equivalent of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5. AimsThis course aims to: Analyse the global burden of disease and major risk factors for disease in children including inequality Evaluate recent research that has informed changes in health practice and programmatic approaches to improving child survival in low resource settings: IMCI; EPI Evaluate and apply basic approaches and tools used to improve the quality of health interventions Evaluate and apply approaches to adult learning that change health worker behaviour Lead improvements in child health through improved disease prevention and clinical management CareersThe main focus of this course is to develop the future leaders of global child health. It is suitable for people working in paediatrics, global health, and health systems development using quality improvement.
