Dr Ben Morton has won the Research Student of the Year award at the 2017 North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards.
An Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at LSTM, Dr Morton is a consultant in critical care medicine and anaesthesia at Aintree University Hospital and was nominated by LSTM’s Senior Clinical Lecturer Dr John Blakey. He was presented with the award at ceremony this week at the Hilton Hotel hosted by medical journalist and broadcaster, Lawrence McGinty.
Dr Morton said: “I am delighted to be awarded this prestigious honour and must acknowledge the excellent supervision from Stephen Gordon, John Blakey and Ingeborg Welters during my doctoral degree. My work would not have been possible without the support of the Respiratory Infection Group here at LSTM and in particular Elena Mitsi, Shaun Pennington and Jesus Reine. I am proud to work at LSTM and hope to continue my association as I progress in my research career.”
The awards aim to celebrate the success and excellent work being undertaken across the region in clinical research and innovation in health, and Dr Blakey is clear that Dr Morton deserves his win. “Ben has been an exemplary MD candidate over the past two years and typifies many of the attributes that we hope to see in our clinical research students. He is extremely well organised and during his MD has produced nine peer reviewed papers, several well-received conference presentations and has submitted three grants,” said Dr Blakey. “I am really pleased that Ben has been recognised by the NIHR, He has been a very constructive part of the broader research team, and contributed clinical and intellectual input into other ongoing projects, helping to develop research-interested colleagues and students.”
