Eligibility: This scholarship will be awarded to someone working in a practical settings in maternal and newborn health such as a doctor or midwife/nurse who is domiciled and a national of a LMIC country. Course Overview Renewed efforts are needed to improve maternal and newborn health and reduce the burden of preventable maternal and newborn deaths including stillbirths. This focus is especially relevant in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where the vast majority of these deaths occur. Mothers and their newborns should expect to receive care that is respectful, timely and evidence based. The Postgraduate Certificate Maternal Newborn Health (PgCertMNH) aims to strengthen the capacity of health professionals working in maternal and newborn health to provide evidence-based interventions to improve quality of care and to reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality in these settings. The PgCertMNH is designed as a part-time course and will be delivered virtually; 80% asynchronized. Students will learn together with peers from across the globe to develop skills for studying and networking online as well as the knowledge, skills, and competencies to support interventions in maternal and newborn health throughout the health sector from community engagement to national and global policy. The PgCertMNH is awarded by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and will be taught and assessed at master’s degree (FHEQ Level 7). Students will be expected to dedicate about 15 hours per week to their learning during the modules. This includes time spent on lectures, engaging with online content flexibly, preparation, tutorials, formative assignments, independent study, and marked assessments. This programme includes three 20 credit modules, these are: Introduction to maternal and newborn health (LMICs) Epidemiology of maternal and newborn health Global strategies and priorities to improve maternal and newborn health Life continuum including the impact of maternal and perinatal loss Health systems and the rights-based approach to maternal and newborn health Best practice: pre-conception, pregnancy, and intrapartum care (LMICs) Role of pre-conception care in optimising outcomes Antenatal care and fetal surveillance Intra-partum care of the mother and fetus Emergency obstetric care - maternal Best practice: postnatal care of mothers and newborns (LMICs) Immediate postnatal care of mother and newborn Prevention and management of maternal complications in the postnatal period Early essential newborn care Care of the small and sick infant Successful students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certficiate Maternal & Newborn Health by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Students are then able to continue their studies to a Postgraduate Diploma and a final year of student would lead to a Master's degree. Entrance RequirementsAcademic requirements: Open to registered/licensed healthcare professionals and graduates including midwives, nurses, doctors (obstetricians, paediatricians and anaesthetists) as well as allied healthcare workers such as auxiliary nurse midwives, clinical officers/physician associates with a minimum of one years’ experience in maternal and newborn health.English language requirements: The programme is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. To provide students with opportunities to develop skills needed to effectively manage maternal and newborn health programmes in low-resource settings. To produce graduates who are resilient, committed, informed, pro-active, and effective professionals, capable of taking substantial and leading professional roles in maternal and newborn health in low-and middle-income countries.
