This equates to a woman dying every 2 minutes.For each woman who dies, 30 survive but suffer lifelong morbidity. In addition, 3 million babies worldwide are stillborn, and an additional 3 million die in the first week of life.The Centre for Maternal & Newborn Health (CMNH) is based at LSTM and has a research portfolio over £20 million. It works in 11 countries, and partner strategically with governments, ministries of health and global agencies to ensure the optimum impact of its work, and that key findings are disseminated appropriately. The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all our students, and students who do not wish to be entered for academic credits will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.Course Outline This course aims to provide you with a knowledgeable and critical understanding of the concepts and key issues related to Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH), in line with the current international agendas. In this course, you will learn how to develop a strategic plan for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity, and how to plan, organise, monitor and evaluate evidence-based MNH programmes and services, taking into consideration the importance of effective, functioning health systems. Topics covered include: the causes and determinants of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity; the global burden of and key strategies for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity; skilled attendance at birth and emergency obstetric care; evidence-based antenatal and postnatal care, measuring maternal mortality and morbidity; monitoring and evaluation of MNH services; community and demand-side aspects of MNH; and promoting evidence-based practice in maternal and newborn health care. The course is taught through a combination of lectures and student-led seminars. A student-centred approach is taken, using discussion and group work, supported by independent study and directed reading. Entrance RequirementsAcademic requirements: Anyone who works in the fields of international child health would find this course useful, especially doctors, nurses, midwives, community health practitioners and public health researchers. English language requirements: Attending course with Academic Credit: The course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years. Attending course – Certificate of Attendance Only: The course is taught in English and in a postgraduate setting. Students whose first language is not English should be aware that to benefit from the course participants should have English language proficiency at the equivalent of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5.
