This is an Online / Part-Time, Masters level 20 credit module available for continuing professional development. This module forms part of our MSc Global Health.

This course will provide you with core theoretical knowledge and important skills for effective leadership in various global health settings.

You will be introduced to various key concepts in leadership including:

Governance
Health systems
Systems thinking
Quality improvement
Service development and
Efficiency measurement

Different leadership theories will be critically discussed, with case studies presented to facilitate group discussions on the practical application of concepts to various scenarios. You will also gain knowledge on how leadership influences the planning, functioning and structuring of local and global health systems.

It is taught using student-centred approaches that include virtual classrooms, online group exercises, chat rooms, blogs, case studies, self-directed and directed reading and recorded presentations from experts in global health systems leadership. The online exercises will provide you with continuous formative feedback. You will keep a reflective diary that documents your learning throughout. Your reflections in the diary will contribute towards assessed reflective summary.

20 Academic Credits - Assessments

Please see attached specification for assessment information. Assessments are optional but advise all students to take the assessments to cement their learning and to earn highly transferrable credits.

For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (Masters level credit). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Attending course with Academic Credit:

Attending course – Certificate of Attendance Only:
The course is taught in English and in a postgraduate setting. Students whose first language is not English should be aware that to benefit from the course participants should have English language proficiency at the equivalent of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5.

This course aims to:

Critically appraise different leadership theories and styles and how they influence outcomes in various health systems.

Communicate effectively with the public

Critically engage with evidence in developing strategies for change in health systems and services that will improve wellbeing

Critically reflect on their role and that of others in global collaborative work for health.
