This module forms part of our MSc Global Health.The online programme provides you with further knowledge and practical skills in epidemiology and statistics. It will allow you to address global health issues by analysing and interpreting epidemiological data and critically appraising the quality of evidence from epidemiological studies. This programme equips you with the knowledge and more advanced practical skills in quantitative approaches that are important for the detailed exploration of global health issues. You will have the opportunity to work with epidemiological data sets, plan a strategy and conduct more advanced statistical analyses of the data using appropriate statistical software. You will also learn how to interpret and present the results.Teaching sessions typically comprise pre-recorded presentations and exercises. You will experience a range of learning approaches including the virtual and flipped classroom, problem-based group work, recorded lectures, case studies, research papers and threaded discussion boards. You will benefit from the global health research and teaching expertise within LSTM. There are 180 learning hours associated with this 12 week online part time programme - broken down as follows: 12 hours of online resources including recorded lectures 12 seminar hours of threaded discussion boards, chat rooms and blogs 1 hour tutorial - one-to-one discussion with personal tutor via email or skype 43 'laboratory' hours of working with large datasets (computer based) 50 hours working on assessments 62 independent study hours Outline Introduction to the programme and scientific methods in epidemiology and statistics Ethics Descriptive statistics and secondary analysis of routine data Data computation and analysis Epidemiology and Statistics to inform global health policy Critical appraisal of epidemiology and statistics research Monitoring and evaluation Working with large data sets Policy analysis and interpretation Systematic review skills and interpretation and application of evidence to health policy and practice. 20 Academic Credits - Assessments Please see attached specification for assessment information. Assessments are optional but advise all students to take the assessments to cement their learning and to earn highly transferrable credits. For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (Masters level credit). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Entrance RequirementsRecognition of prior learning: All programmes of study will permit entry with credit attributed to previous certificated study up to a total of one third of the credits required to be awarded a Master’s Degree, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.English language requirements: Attending course with Academic CreditThe course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking.
