David combines academic work at LSTM with his health service role as a public health physician at the national public health agency in Wales (Consultant Epidemiologist, Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, Public Health Wales NHS Trust).
Clinical and public health background: David qualified in medicine in Nigeria (Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) and specialised in internal medicine (FWACP, West Africa), before UK specialist training in public health medicine in Liverpool, Lancashire, and London. Since 2012, he has worked in both full-time and honorary consultant roles with Public Health England (now UKHSA), and currently Public Health Wales.
Research training and experience: He obtained a PhD at Utrecht University (Netherlands), followed by postdoctoral health protection research at UCL and PHE Colindale; and field team leadership in global public health research at LSHTM (coordinating multi-partner Ebola vaccine trials, leading a capacity building programme, and managing health systems engagement in Sierra Leone, 2015-2021).
Medical and public health teaching: David has taught public health and clinical subjects at postgraduate and undergraduate level, including experience with curriculum development and course leadership; across different resource settings (high and low-income); and using different mediums (in person and virtual).
