This is an Online / Part-Time, Masters level 20 credit module available for continuing professional development. This module forms part of our MSc Global Health. Programme Outline The module introduces you to the emergence of global health as a discipline, its meanings, key concepts, and values that drive its practices and your position within the discipline. You will develop a critical understanding of key concepts in global health, its history, and the power imbalances inherent within the discipline, necessitating reflectivity, safeguarding, and ethical practices. Through this module you will be able to critically explore how the social determinants of health operating at local and global levels influence the unequal distribution of ill-health. Learning is supported by a range of online teaching methods that include directed and self-directed learning, debates, seminars, group work, case studies and threaded discussion boards. You will also develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and communication supporting you in driving innovative solutions that help to improve health outcomes. Summative assessment: A 3500-word individual case study essay. Topics will include Emergence of global health as a discipline The contested concepts ‘decolonising’ Demographic, nutritional and epidemiological transitions Social determinants of health and inequalities Globalisation and health Positionality Safeguarding and ethics in global health practices Getting the evidence and critical appraisal 20 Academic Credits - Assessments Please see attached specification for assessment information. Assessments are optional but advise all students to take the assessments to cement their learning and to earn highly transferrable credits. For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (Masters level credit). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years.
