T-REC PhD student, Dr. Lucy Asamoah-Akuoko (right on picture), received the ‘Outstanding Female Doctor’ award in the Ghana Women’s Awards 2013. Lucy works with the National Blood Service (NBS) of Ghana and is researching strategies to encourage repeat donations among first-time voluntary and replacement blood donors in Ghana. Her PhD project is a collaboration between the Universities of Ghana, Liverpool and Copenhagen.
In 1990, Lucy won a scholarship to study in the Ukraine, and obtained an MD degree from the State Pirogov Memorial Medical University in Vinnitsa, Ukraine. After qualifying as a doctor in 1997 she returned to Ghana and worked with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. As a requirement for her postgraduate training in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, she was posted to the National Blood Transfusion Service. She believes in the saying that, “There is no limit to the amount of good you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit.”
Organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ghana Women’s Awards 2013 honours selfless and dedicated services of Ghanaian women in their various fields of endeavor. This year’s event was held on the theme ‘Celebrating womanhood, a key element for national development’ at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, 31st May, 2013.
Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection congratulated the award winners, saying that, women have the power to change the lives of people in the positive way. She advised them to mentor other young women and also serve as their role models to enable them succeed. In all, 20 outstanding women were awarded for excelling in their various fields.
