LSTM’s Diploma in Tropical Nursing has been accredited by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Centre for Professional Accreditation until July 2014. The accreditation has to be renewed on an annual basis.
The purpose of RCN accreditation is to promote best practice and to contribute to public and patient safety by ensuring access to quality-assured learning initiatives that support nursing and health care delivery. The RCN accredits learning and development initiatives that want to guarantee that their initiatives are up to date, of the highest quality, effective in educating nurses and the wider health care family, and promote best practice.
Accreditation involves peer review by expert representatives drawn from clinical, management and educational fields of practice who have the appropriate professional background and experience.
The course runs twice a year and can facilitate up to 60 students each time. It involves a 3-week intensive programme which is designed for nurses and midwives who intend to work in developing countries. The course will provide a wide knowledge base, incorporating laboratory work, clinical aspects of infectious diseases, child health, sexual health, neglected tropical diseases, non-communicable diseases as well as professional topics such as leading change, governance and ethics.
