LSTM is hosting the NIHR funded Health Protection Research Unit in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections’ conference on Ebola and other high consequence infections.

The two-day High consequence infectious disease from bench to outbreak response has been jointly organised by Professor Miles Carroll of Public Health England, Professor Julian Hiscox of the University of Liverpool and LSTM’s Dr Tom Fletcher. It brings together speakers from the NHS, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and numerous international universities and hospitals, with expertise not only in Ebola, but also other viral hemorrhagic fevers, Zika and MERS.

LSTM’s Dr Tom Fletcher said: “The ongoing outbreak of Ebola in DRC, with cases now moving into Uganda, and the recent one in West Africa highlight the potential ability of emerging pathogens to cause public health crises and international epidemics. It is fantastic to bring together the key players in research and field interventions and over these next two days we will be examining the key challenges and opportunities of researching and managing a range of high consequence infections.

The symposium provides participants with a unique opportunity to hear from world-class speakers with first hand expertise of researching and managing a range of HCIDs. It aims to cover the broad picture of this emerging threat, and the challenges that arise from it.

The programme is enriched with a combination of experience and lessons from the field, but also includes basic research that is leading to innovation approaches in diagnosis and treatment.

Recording of the conference will be made available as of next week.
