It is with great sadness that LSTM has learnt of the death of Sir Leslie Young. A celebrated leader of Liverpool’s business community, he was also an LSTM Vice President since 1993.
Born in Eltham in South-East London on February 5, 1925 and educated at the London School of Economics, Sir Leslie first became a major figure in Liverpool’s business community in 1970 when he took over as managing director of J Bibby & Sons; one of the city’s most prominent businesses at the time. In 1980, he was selected to become chairman of the Merseyside Development Corporation and charged with overseeing the revitalisation of Liverpool’s docks. This ambitious rejuvenation was highlighted by the renovated Albert Dock, which became home of the Tate Liverpool.
He was a deputy lieutenant of Merseyside, was appointed CBE in 1980 and knighted in 1984.
Sir Leslie Young passed away on October 20, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Gittens, and his two children.
