Dr Parry completed a BA(Hons) in Natural Sciences in 1980 and MB BCh in 1984 at the University of Cambridge and trained in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Clinical Microbiology and Tropical Medicine in the UK and Malawi. He has specialist accreditation in Clinical Microbiology and has completed the DTMH at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and a PhD from the UK Open University.
He was based at the Oxford Clinical Research Unit, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from 1995 to 2002; in the Oxford South-East Asia Tropical Network in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bangladesh from 2009 to 2012; and between 2014 to 2016 was based at the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, in Nagasaki University, Japan with projects in the Philippines, Nepal and Fiji.
He is an NHS Consultant at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and visiting Professor at the University of Oxford and the University of Nagasaki. He is the Director of Studies for the DTMH programme in LSTM and teaches on postgraduate programmes in Nagasaki.
Research
Research interests concern the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of severe bacterial infections in south and southeast Asia with a focus on typhoid fever. He is co-investigator in the ACT-South Asia randomised controlled trial of antibiotic therapy in suspected uncomplicated typhoid fever funded by Joint Global Health Trials Scheme (Department of Health and Social Care, the Department for International Development, the Global Challenges Research Fund, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust).
Dr Parry is Director of studies for the DTMH programme.
