The FP7 supported consortium AvecNet has launched a new look website to highlight the work that they are undertaking to prevent the spread of malaria.
AvecNet, which is hosted by LSTM, is a partnership of 16 research groups based in Africa and Europe. It brings together vector biologists, epidemiologists, ecologists, statisticians and social scientists who are working together to ensure sustainable malaria control in the face of growing insecticide resistance.
The consortium is focused on developing new tools, translating new findings into improved vector control and strengthening capacity and these activities are highlighted on the new .website .The objectives of the 10 work packages that form the AvecNet project, are described and progress towards the overall goals of AvecNet presented.
AvecNet Coordinator, and LSTM’s Head of Vector Biology, Professor Hilary Ranson, said: “I hope that the new website helps people to understand clearly the aims of AvecNet. Vector control is the most effective means to prevent malaria transmission but new tools are urgently needed to combat resistance and to attack mosquitoes not targeted by current measures. We aim to present a focussed and pragmatic approach to meet this challenge and deliver novel and improved tools in the field of vector control that can ultimately protect the millions of people worldwide who are at risk of contracting malaria.”
