Four PhD students supported by the NIHR-funded LSTM-led International Multidisciplinary Programme to Address Lung Health &TB in Africa have visited LSTM on Friday 10th November to hear about the Programme from the Director, Prof Bertie Squire, and from Co-Deputy Directors, Dr Angela Obasi and Dr Kevin Mortimer.

I know I speak on behalf of all the IMPALA Directors and Theme Leads (Social Science, Health Systems, Health Economics, Policy and Clinical-Public Health), when I say that it was a great pleasure to welcome the five IMPALA PhD students to the Programme”, said Prof Bertie Squire, Director of the IMPALA Programme. “This was a landmark day for us and sets the tone for collaborative and multi-disciplinary working to improve Lung Health and reduce the ravages of TB in Africa in the years to come”, he concluded.

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to visit LSTM premises, share ideas on the best practices to conduct research, hear about public engagement in research, as well as to meet their supervisors during 1-to-1 meetings. Brenda Mungai, the fifth PhD student funded by IMPALA, joined the discussions via Skype from Kenya. The students are currently enrolled in a one-year MRes in Global Health: Translational Research and Quantitative Skills at Lancaster University. Following the completion of this course, they will commence the research work for their PhD.
