Earlier today, LSTM has signed up to the AllTrials campaign, which is looking to have all clinical trials registered and their results and methods recorded to encourage full transparency
The campaign believes that patients, researchers, pharmacists, doctors and regulators everywhere will benefit from the publication of clinical trial results. As it stands thousands of clinical trials have not reported their results, some of them have not even been registered. The AllTrials campaign wants to ensure that the contribution of the thousands of people who participate in clinical trials annually is not wasted and that results are fully available to those health professionals who make treatment decisions every day.
Professor Brian Faragher, who heads LSTM’s Clinical Trials Unit, stresses the importance of signing up to the campaign: “We are really keen to see that all trial results are published fully. LSTM is pleased to sign up to AllTrials and ensure that there is full transparency in the work that we carry out, both here and overseas. At LSTM we have always worked to ensure that the best possible interventions are available to those people suffering from infectious and debilitating diseases and conditions among some of the World’s poorest communities. Being part of this campaign means that we are determined to make sure all of our results are available to the people who need them most.”
The AllTrials campaign was set up in 2013 and is now supported by thousands of individual patients, practitioners and researchers as well as over 500 organisations. It states that trials with negative results are twice as likely to remain unreported as those with positive results, which means that those people making medical decisions are not aware of all the information relating to treatments that are used every day.
