Trial statistician for two clinical trials (in Uganda and India) for the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and for a clinical trial in the private sector.

Brian Faragher trained as a statistician at the Liverpool University and the University College of Wales. After working for short periods in commercial agricultural and pharmaceutical research organisations, he moved to the University Hospital of South Manchester to set up a research support unit providing statistical and computing support to researchers based there. This unit eventually transferred to the University of Manchester Medical School, from where it provided similar support both within the Medical School and to NHS hospitals across Manchester. In addition to heading this unit, Prof. Faragher took a lead role in running several large clinical studies, including the MICA study into the link between oral contraception and myocardial infarction. He also completed his PhD during this time based on a case-control study of the relationship between psychosocial stressors and breast cancer. In 1999, Prof. Faragher moved to work with Professor Cary Cooper in the Work Psychology and Health Unit of the University of Manchester, during which time he worked on a collaborative project with the University of Oxford on the impact of production line working on physical and psychological well-being, which was awarded the prestigious Shingo Research Prize in 2005.

Prof. Faragher joined LSTM as Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics in 2005. In addition to providing statistical support and advice to clinical, epidemiological and laboratory based researchers within LSTM and abroad, and contributing extensively the LSTM postgraduate teaching programme, he pursued his personal research interests including the development of statistical methods for analyzing clinical trials / observational studies with discrete outcome measures and the application of structural equation models (SEMs)to clinical research databases.  He has used SEMs to evaluate clinical trials in malaria, TB and HIV. He remains the trial statistician for several clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa and is a member of the Data Safety Management Board for a number of clinical trials. He was a serving member of Research Ethics Committees from 1985 to 2015, initially at the University Hospital of South Manchester and the North-West National NHS REC (latterly as Co-Vice Chair), and finally on the LSTM REC. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

Currently, Prof. Faragher is serving a second term as a Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner (UK Govt. Department for International Development) and is Chair of the Commission’s Evaluation and Monitoring Committee. He is a member of the Editorial Board of PLOS ONE, a statistical reviewer for several clinical journals including “The Lancet”, “The Lancet Infectious Diseases” and “BMJ On-line”, and is a reviewer for the MRC Methodology Research Panel.
