This week LSTM welcomed prospective students as it opened its doors for the second postgraduate open day of the year.
LSTM’s Director of International Education and Knowledge Exchange, Michael Lurie, introduced the potential students to LSTM and the different postgraduate courses and programmes of study available, as well as talking through a number of funding opportunities.
Following the introduction there were presentations from some of the course leaders and visitors were given the option to talk to current and previous students about their experiences of studying at LSTM. There were a number of demonstrations from research staff highlighting the work carried out in the laboratories on site and in numerous countries overseas.
Researchers and educators then took the prospective students on tour of LSTM, visiting the main teaching laboratory, The Dagnall, which is about to celebrate its centenary along with the state-of-the-art laboratory and insectary facilities in LSTM’s Centre for Tropical Infectious Diseases. The tours afforded them an opportunity to ask staff about some of the life-saving work being carried out both here at LSTM as well as across a host of developing countries.
Michael Lurie was delighted with the feedback received. He said: “This was another very successful open afternoon, giving prospective students an opportunity to discover more about our courses and research options and, most importantly, giving them the chance to talk to teaching staff and current students and alumni about their experiences of studying here. We are able to offer students an excellent post-graduate education and assist then in reaching their goals. LSTM is the oldest institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in tropical medicine, offering a supportive student environment since 1898. I hope that our visitors gained an insight on how they can be part of our ongoing legacy, with an opportunity to work with the best in the world and carry out research that has the potential to benefit people all over the world.”
