This year’s Annual Scientific Meeting of the Wellcome Trust Liverpool Glasgow for Global Health Research (WTCGHR) has just concluded in Chester, with researchers this year welcoming the Chair of the Union, Dr Jane Carter, following their World Conference on Lung Health in Liverpool.

Over 150 researchers from LSTM, Malawi, The Universities of Liverpool and Glasgow, the Wellcome Trust and invited guests met for their meeting at the Queens Hotel in Chester. Following on from last year’s meeting in Malawi, there was an opportunity for health research institutions to come together to share skills and knowledge and look at ways to collaborate more closely.

A large number of researchers from LSTM were in attendance, including, Deputy Director Steve Ward and WTCGHR’s Centre Director, Professor David Lalloo. Sessions included child health, lung health and TB, surviving sepsis and looking at the aftermath of epidemics. Professor Lalloo said: “Collaboration is key in addressing some of the existing and emerging problems in global health today. These meetings provide us with an opportunity to come together and look at what we have achieved in the last 12 months and how we move forward, and are of particular benefit to our Research and Clinical PhD fellows who have the chance to showcase their work.”

The WRCGHR is a collaborative centre between LSTM, the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, The University of Glasgow Centre for Molecular Parasitology and is funded by the Wellcome Trust. The Annual Scientific Meeting offers a great opportunity for scientists to showcase their work and promote scientific interaction at all levels. Activities at the meeting included plenary lectures, oral presentations, poster presentations and break-away sessions.
