LSTM students swept the board for awards at the recent British Society for Parasitology’s (BSP) 53rd annual spring conference, held in Liverpool earlier this month.

Students from LSTM won all six awards in the poster and oral presentation categories after being voted as best by the delegates at the conference. Over 400 parasitologists spent three days at the conference, during which they examined around 150 student poster presentations and 40 student oral presentations before making their choices, which were announced late last week.

PhD student, Josephine Parker from the Department of Vector Biology won £200 cash or Cambridge University Press publication for her 1st place oral presentation entitled: Shooting swoops: video tracking Anopheles gambiae flight around insecticide treated bed nets. She was followed by Karina Mondragon-Shem and Lucas Cunningham who took 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

Fellow Vector Biology PhD Student, Christopher Spencer took the 1st place in the poster presentation category for his poster entitled: Anopheles gambiae redox enzymes: Haem oxygenase and Cytochrome Reductase, being awarded £200 in cash or the equivalent in Cambridge University Press publications. Fellow LSTM students Katherine Gleave and Adriana Adolfi took 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Dr Emily Adams, of LSTM’s Research Centre for Drugs and Diagnostics (RCDD) is the Honorary Communications Secretary for the BSP and says that the organising team were delighted with the standard of entries for this year’s awards. She said: “There were some excellent presentations and I think the delegates really enjoyed meeting the students and listening to them talk about their work. I am particularly pleased for the LSTM students who saw their work recognised by those attending the conference, they should be extremely proud of themselves as the standard of this year’s entries was very high.”
