They often end up in large camps, where environmental health measures are insufficient.You will be taught by staff who are at the forefront of teaching and research in the humanitarian sector.No longer the realm of resource-poor settings, skills learnt on this course are useful for many fields such as medicine, social care, local government, public health, and NGO/humanitarian work. APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN Course Outline This course aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and critical understanding needed to adopt an evidence-based and reasoned approach to strategic planning, needs assessment and management of refugee and displaced populations across the spectrum from emergency relief to sustainable development In this programme, you will learn about managing responses to displacement; mobilising and managing human and financial resources; security and self-care of humanitarian actors; the impact of humanitarian action; and managing the transition from emergency relief to sustainable development. We will discuss civil-military relations, post-conflict disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration, children in conflict and child separation and issues of post-conflict reconstruction. Core information will be presented in lectures and in-depth discussions will take place in seminars involving group work based around case studies and problem-solving exercises.Course Outline Managing Responses to Displacement• the key elements of a relief programme• managing and co-ordinating refugees / IDPs in a variety of settings• importance of coordination and good leadership in management of resources and constraints• project cycle management and the systems model in planning a relief operation.• team building and motivation• cross-cultural communication and community participation• vulnerable groups in refugee and displaced populations Mobilising & Managing Human and Financial Resources• human resources in relief operations• project proposals and logframes• principles of good financial management in humanitarian operations Impact of Humanitarian Action• rationale for and principle methods of evaluation• application of humanitarian principles and standards to evaluation Emergency vs Development Divide• long-term solutions for refugees and internally displaced persons.• exit strategies in humanitarian assistance programmes• micro and macro-economic stabilization• post-conflict transition strategies• management of the transition to sustainable development 10 Academic Credits Assessment is a 1.5 hour short answer examination in LSTM For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (Masters level credit). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Entrance RequirementsAcademic requirements: Any person working in international development and humanitarianism would benefit from attending this course. English language requirements: Attending course with Academic Credit: The course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years. Attending course – Certificate of Attendance Only: The course is taught in English and in a postgraduate setting. Students whose first language is not English should be aware that to benefit from the course participants should have English language proficiency at the equivalent of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5.
