Programme Overview

This course aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and critical understanding needed to adopt an evidence-based and reasoned approach to managing the health and wellbeing of refugee and displaced populations across the spectrum from emergency relief to sustainable development and integration.

You will learn about:

• managing responses to displacement;
• mobilising and managing human and financial resources;
• security and self-care of humanitarian actors;
• the impact of humanitarian action;
• and managing the transition from emergency relief to sustainable development.

It touches a variety of issues related to relief management in displacement situations such as civil-military relations, post-conflict disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration, children in conflict and child separation, displaced and host communities’ relations and issues of post-conflict reconstruction. It will also provide an overview of common public health problems in humanitarian emergencies and practices by aid agencies to respond to these.

Academic Credit

For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (20 Masters level credits). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. 30% 25 minute Group Presentation - Case study of a specific humanitarian emergency. Critically analyse the origins, evolution, & response with recommendations regarding prevention/impact reduction in future similar circumstances.  Formative role-play activity.

70% Critical Review - A proposal for a humanitarian intervention, to include a logical-framework/theory of change element, a comprehensive description of the various parts of the project and 500-1000 words of critical reflection on the proposal and project planning tools used.
