Liverpool’s Pandemic Institute has today launched a Student Excellence Award to support the career development of PhD students, thanks to a generous donation by DAM Health.

DAM Health is a leading provider in the UK for in-clinic COVID-19 testing solutions and soon to embark into wider diagnostics. Ten awards of £5,000 will be made available, on a competitive basis, for full-time and part-time PhD students working in the area of infection or diagnostics at the University of Liverpool, LSTM, and Liverpool John Moores University. The Student Excellence Award will enable winners to broaden their vision through attendance at an international conference or to undertake training and development opportunities.

Professor Matthew Baylis, Director of the Pandemic Institute said: “The Pandemic Institute is focused on preparing the world for future pandemics, and we are passionate about developing the next generation of leading scientists to achieve our ambitious targets. We recognise the impact and significance of this generous gift from DAM Health for the students of Liverpool who themselves have suffered significantly because of this pandemic.”

Professor Frank Joseph, Medical Director of DAM Health said: “We are incredibly proud to be partnering with the Pandemic Institute with the Student Excellence Award. We are committed at DAM Health to working with the brightest and most brilliant scientific minds and many of them are studying here in the city – it’s fantastic to be able to support them on their journey and we very much hope some will join us on our journey here. We believe this award will help inspire and develop the generation of students who will become the key figures in the fight against possible future pandemics and wider medical diagnostics.”

The Pandemic Institute is a medical, academic and civic partnership between the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, LSTM, Liverpool University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Knowledge Quarter (KQ) Liverpool. The Pandemic Institute will offer world-leading clinical and research expertise across all stages of the pandemic lifecycle. It will have global reach, working across the world to deliver new science and build preparedness for future pandemics. The outputs of its work will be rapidly translated into tangible policy, solutions and activity, ensuring real world impact for governments, businesses and individuals across the globe.
