LSTM’s class of 2017 graduated this afternoon at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall. The graduating class included 79 MSc students, eight PhD students and one receiving a diploma, all of whom have recently completed their studies at LSTM.
Many of those graduating are currently overseas, but those able to attend the ceremony in person were invited to an informal lunch at LSTM with their family and friends, hosted by the Education team and LSTM’s Director, Professor Janet Hemingway.
Following lunch, a number of graduates from across the different Masters programmes received awards from Dr Sue Assinder, LSTM’s Director of Education. While not all of those receiving awards were present they were all equally applauded by staff and fellow students.
The international students receiving their postgraduate degrees came from Europe, Africa and Asia and were presented to Liverpool University’s Vice Chancellor by Dr Assinder. The subjects covered in the degrees included elimination strategies for Onchocerciasis, the transmission risk of mosquito borne disease between people and non-human primates and carers perceptions and experiences of providing care to preterm babies.
Dr Assinder said: “It is always a great pleasure to be able to watch the hard work of our students recognised in their graduation ceremonies. Many of our alumni hold eminent positions in the fields of tropical medicine and global health and I have no doubt that this latest group of graduates can also go on to excel in their chosen fields, and we hope that LSTM has further opportunities to work with them going forward. Now that we have been granted degree awarding powers, we look forward to future ceremonies where our graduates receive awards directly from LSTM.”
