LSTM is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Peter Winstanley as Director of Strategic Projects. His main role will be overseeing LSTM's collaboration with the University of Liverpool in setting up the Centre of Excellence in Infectious Disease Research (CEIDR).
Professor Winstanley is well known to many at LSTM through numerous collaborations over many years. After graduating from the University of Liverpool in 1979 he worked closely with LSTM from the mid 1980s until leaving the University in 2010. While at Liverpool he worked with LSTM's Deputy Director Steve Ward on the development of new antimalarial drugs in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Medicines for Malaria, the Department for International Development (DFID) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Between 1995 - 2009 Professor Winstanley was the Director of the Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre, preceding LSTM's Professor David Lalloo. Working alongside Malcolm Molyneux and Robert Heyderman he helped the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Research Programme's Development. Also while at Liverpool he led the University's successful bid for a NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, which he directed until he left Liverpool in 2010.
From 2010 Professor Winstanley has been at the University of Warwick, where he was Dean of Medicine and Chair of the Faculty until his recent retirement. His partnership with LSTM continued at Warwick, where he was instrumental in forging cross-campus links with LSTM's Centre for Applied Health Research and Delivery (CAHRD).
Professor Winstanley said: "I'm delighted to return to Liverpool after my 6 fruitful years at Warwick. LSTM continues to go from strength to strength and I hope to be able to contribute to its continuing success"
LSTM's Director, Professor Janet Hemingway, said: "I am delighted to welcome Peter to LSTM. We have a long history of rewarding collaboration and I am confident that he will prove a valuable asset to LSTM and our future development."
