Professor Janet Hemingway has been recognised for her achievements in the field of infection control and vaccine development, with two prestigious awards at this year’s Northern Leadership Awards.

On receiving the Overall Leader of the Year Award, Professor Hemingway said: “I never look back, I always look forward. I’ve circumnavigated the globe to end up back here in the north. I’d like to leave a legacy here, of something quite large.”

Professor Hemingway was appointed the Director of LSTM in 2001 and stepped down in 2019. She oversaw a period of exceptional growth at LSTM, which included the awarding of Higher Education Institution Status & Degree Awarding powers to the institution.

Professor Hemingway also won the Regional Leadership Award and received a standing ovation in recognition of her work in the North West. She founded iiCon in 2020 to bring together industry, academia, and the NHS, to save lives globally by accelerating the discovery, diagnostics, and treatment of infectious diseases.

The award ceremony took place at Manchester’s Midlands Hotel and was hosted by The Business Desk North West to highlight excellence in leadership in the region.
