Professor Mark Woodhead has been appointed as Honorary Research Fellow of the LSTM. Professor Woodhead trained in London and currently is Consultant and Honorary Clinical Professor in Respiratory and General Medicine at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He is the leading expert in pneumonia in the UK and has been an international opinion leader in this field for over 20 years. He has authored several seminal reviews on the management of pneumonia in adults and has chaired numerous guideline committees.
Professor Woodhead currently chairs the NICE pneumonia guideline development group and is National Clinical Adviser to the Department of Health on Pneumonia. Further, he is pneumonia lead for the Advancing Quality programme, recently shown in The New England Journal of Medicine to reduce inpatient pneumonia mortality in the Northwest of England. He has also recently lead the set-up of Tuberculosis cohort review across the same region.
Given that Professor Woodhead advises UK policy on pneumonia management his honorary appointment with LSTM will benefit the ongoing development of LSTM pneumonia research as well as advise and assist in the pneumonia vaccine research programme.
