Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s new Chancellor has been announced – internationally-acclaimed humanitarian leader Elhadj As Sy will be formally installed at a ceremony later this year.

‘As’ brings many years of experience in the fields of global health, development and humanitarian aid and is currently the Chair of the Board of the Kofi Annan Foundation and former Secretary General of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. He has also previously held leadership roles at UNICEF, the United Nations and the Global Fund.

On accepting the role As said: “It is unacceptable that tropical diseases continue to be paired with neglect. LSTM answers that call with education and research to save lives and alleviate suffering among the most vulnerable and hardest to reach, and I am honoured and highly committed to serve as its inaugural Chancellor.”

Vice-Chancellor of LSTM, Professor David Lalloo said: "I am delighted that As will be joining us as LSTM’s first Chancellor. This is a milestone moment in our 125-year history as we look to the future and LSTM’s role in delivering systemic change and impact across global health.

"He brings a long-standing commitment to global health and humanitarian aid which aligns with our own mission, and his experience and values reflect our values and dedication to equitable partnerships, diversity and inclusion. I look forward to working with As over the coming years to drive LSTM’s mission forward."

The role of Chancellor replaces that of President, most recently held by Sir Richard Evans CBE who retired earlier this year.

Chair of LSTM’s Board of Trustees, Jim McKenna, recognised Sir Richard’s contribution to LSTM: "I would like to thank Sir Richard Evans for his unwavering support and longstanding commitment to LSTM. He has been a passionate supporter for LSTM throughout his term of office. I look forward to working with As, as an advocate and ambassador for LSTM."

The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University. They undertake important ambassadorial duties, promoting LSTM’s work across the world.

As will be formally installed at LSTM’s Class of 2024 Graduation ceremony at St George’s Hall, Liverpool on Monday 9 December 2024.
