Dr Mary McCauley nominated as part of NIMDTA Educational Excellence Day

Dr Mary McCauley from LSTM’s Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (CMNH) has been nominated and shortlisted for an award by the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Academy (NIMDTA) at their annual award ceremony.

As a senior registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr McCauley is a trainee with the NIMDTA, and is currently on  a three year secondment at with CMNH while studying for her PhD, during which time she was   instrumental in CMNH winning the Women’s Health team at the British Medical Journal (BMJ) annual awards in  in 2015. Dr McCauley led the writing of the proposal for the BMJ award and presented the details of the excellent work CMNH do with the ‘Making it Happen’ programme in front of a panel of judges, resulting in  CMNH’s Emergency (Essential) Obstetric Training being declared the winner in the Women’s Health Category at the national BMJ awards.

Following her success at BMJ, Professor Keith Gardiner (Head of MIMDTA) nominated her for an award in the Recognition by National Award category, the winner of which will be announced in at an event this week in Belfast, Northern Ireland, entitled NIMDTA Educational Excellence - Dare to Excel.

“I am absolutely delighted to have been nominated for this award, particularly as it came as such a surprise.” said Dr McCauley: “I personally think the work all the team at CMNH carry out, in particular the Making it Happen Programme is inspirational and vitally important resulting in saving the lives of mothers and their babies in the poorest countries in the world. I am thrilled to be part of this fantastic team and am flattered to have been nominated and shortlisted for an award in relation to my role within the team.”
