Director of Education appointed

LSTM has appointed Dr Sue Assinder as its first Director of Education. This new post is a key strategic appointment which will shape the future development of learning and teaching at LSTM as it strives to become an international leader in education.

Sue's joins LSTM from Bangor University where she was Director of the Academic Development Unit, responsible for delivering professional development in teaching and learning. She has extensive experience of quality assurance and curriculum development both at Bangor and with the Quality Assurance Agency and sits on the Advisory Board of the Higher Education Academy Centre for Bioscience.

Commenting on the appointment, LSTM's Director, Janet Hemingway, said:

"Sue joins us at a very exciting time for learning and teaching. Her wide experience and obvious passion for delivering a student experience of the highest quality will take our learning offer to the next level."

Anticipating the challenge of her new role, Sue said:

"I am delighted to be joining such an internationally renowned organisation and look forward to playing my part in establishing LSTM as an international leader in education. The successful introduction of modular courses, the growth in demand for short courses and the possibilities for external teaching show LSTM's strengths in quality academic provision. I am very much looking forward to working with colleagues to develop and implement a new Learning, Teaching and Assessment strategy which will guide our learning and teaching portfolio over the next decade."

One of Sue's special interests is promoting public engagement with science, recognised by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Science Communicator of the Year award which Sue received in 1995. She is currently Chair of the Education Committee of the Biosciences Federation and Education Officer of the Society for General Microbiology. Sue is married with three grown-up children
