LSTM's Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (CMNH) have won an award and a commendation at the International Maternity Expo awards ceremony in central London. The awards were established to recognise the 'very finest examples of maternity care, research and best practice'.
Dr Mary McCauley, Academic Clinical Lecturer at CMNH, won the Obstetric Trainee Award for her research assessing maternal morbidity during and after pregnancy in low- and middle-income countries. Her research demonstrated significant ill health that had previously been hidden and/or underestimated.
Hannah McCauley, Senior Research Associate (Midwifery), and Kirsty Lowe, Research Associate (Midwifery), were highly commended for their outstanding contribution to maternity and midwifery services in International Education through their work building the capacity of nurses and midwives in Afghanistan, Togo, Chad and Tanzania.
"It was wonderful to celebrate with colleagues, family, friends and the wider midwifery and research community at this event," said the winners. "We were delighted to be highly commended for our outstanding contribution to maternity and midwifery services in international education. It is always so inspirational to meet up with colleagues, leading academics and peers from the field, and it was wonderful to see representatives from the World Health Organization and the International Confederation of Midwives, who all continue to push forward the agenda for women and their children, not only in the UK but in the wider global community. This award is not only for us as individuals, but for the entire CMNH team in the UK, and our colleagues and partners in all of the countries we work in."
The International Maternity Expo is a “unique new filmed international maternity festival and trade expo for all healthcare professionals, governments, service providers and suppliers working in maternity around the world.” It was specifically designed to reach beyond midwifery and embrace the full spectrum of maternity services in general practice.
