Mary Lyons

Senior Lecturer in Public Health

Areas of interest

Public health teaching, curriculum development and quality assurance, building public health capacity in partnership situations and in low and middle income settings, epidemiology, health needs assessment, environment and sustainability, behaviour change and the implementation of evidence based practice for health.

Background

Mary worked briefly at the University of Central Lancashire, updating a Cochrane review on the prevention of depression in people who have had a stroke; and with funding from Health Education England set up an internship programme to increase research capacity in NHS trusts.  Mary worked for three years as a public health specialist in the NHS, where her prime responsibilities revolved around managing the commissioning of programmes for long tern conditions, especially cardiovascular, and diabetic eye screening.  Mary worked at Liverpool John Moore University from 1998 to 2010, and had a senior strategic role, leading the development and delivery of education programmes for public health at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  Mary also led a team of researchers in environment, sustainability and capacity development linked to public health.

Mary worked in various roles in international health development in the Solomon Islands from 1986 -1997.  Working for Save the Children as a technical adviser to the Ministry of Health, as Peace Corps Medical Officer for Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and as a lecturer at Solomon Islands College of Higher Education.

Teaching

Mary is working with Dr Amir Hassan to develop education programmes for public health in the Eastern Mediterranean region and teaches on the Masters in International Public Health and the Diploma in Tropical Nursing.

Research

Mary is undertaking research to support the development of evidence based curricula for public health educational programmes.

  • Mary is a Defined Specialist on the UK Public Health Register and a Member of the Faculty of Public Health.  Mary is also a Registered General Nurse.
