Justine Fargher, a Global Health Leader in the Making
Justine Fargher is a Registrar in General Surgery at Tygerberg Hospital/Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa, where she is privileged to be part of a program that provides excellent teaching and senior supervision. She is passionate about working in the field of global health and helping to address the challenges faced by resource-poor communities.
Justine's journey into the world of global health started when she was working as a junior doctor in South Africa. She wanted to gain a deeper understanding of healthcare systems in these communities, which led her to enroll in the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTMH) in 2016 at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. She found the course to be an unforgettable experience, not only because of the high-quality teaching and diverse range of students, but also because of the practical and theoretical insights it provided into addressing the challenges faced by communities in resource-poor settings.
After completing the DTMH, Justine went on to pursue a Master's degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics of Health at University College London (UCL). With the knowledge and experience she gained through her studies, she went on to work with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Khayeltisha, South Africa, as a Drug-Resistant TB doctor. Despite enjoying her job, Justine couldn't ignore her lifelong passion for surgery, which led her to leave MSF and pursue a specialization in General Surgery. She is now working towards building a career in Global Surgery, with the DTMH providing an excellent foundation for her future work.
Justine has many fond memories of her time in Liverpool, including exploring the city's rich cultural experiences and museums. She believes that students should make the most of their time at LSTM by investing in the network of connections they develop, as this will be an invaluable resource in the future.
Justine's journey so far is a testament to the impact that LSTM can have on the lives of its students. LSTM continues to attract and produce leaders in the field of Global Health. Two sentences to sum up why students should study at LSTM, as quoted by Justine: "LSTM continues to attract and produce leaders in the field of Global Health, and learning from them as a student at LSTM is a fantastic privilege.”
