Julie Abayomi (CTCM&H, 1995), currently the Associate Head of Medicine and Nutrition at Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom, has forged a distinguished career blending her expertise in dietetics and academic pursuits. Julie's journey began with her qualification as a dietitian in 1993, and she dedicated almost two decades to the NHS as a dietitian. Her commitment extended beyond borders as she worked as a community health worker in Nigeria, contributing to public health initiatives in Taraba state in 1993 and Kogi state in 1996.

In the year 2000, Julie transitioned to a part-time academic role at Liverpool John Moores University, where she taught on undergraduate nutrition programs. During this period, her passion for research blossomed, and she seamlessly integrated her academic role with her dietetic responsibilities at Liverpool Women's Hospital. This convergence led to the completion of her Ph.D. in nutrition, focusing on research conducted at Liverpool Women's Hospital.

In 2019, Julie joined Edge Hill University and assumed the role of Associate Head of Medicine and Nutrition in the new medical school. In this capacity, she oversees the BSc Nutrition and Health program, the MSc Public Health Nutrition program, as well as guiding MRes and Ph.D. students. Her leadership responsibilities span program development, management, and ensuring the smooth operation of undergraduate and postgraduate nutrition programs.

Reflecting on her time at LSTM, Julie highlights the practical lab sessions as a memorable aspect, where she engaged in activities such as making slides, identifying illnesses using a microscope, and examining insects. The collaborative nature of working in teams with students from diverse backgrounds left a lasting impact on her.

Julie's LSTM education has significantly influenced her career, bringing a global perspective to her role as a lecturer in nutrition for over two decades. Her commitment to this global viewpoint has been evident in her extensive career, which includes lecturing, research, and contributions to maternal and child nutrition programs.

For prospective students, Julie advises a balanced approach to academics and social life—working hard to maximise learning opportunities while enjoying the social aspects and forming connections. In her current position at Edge Hill University, Julie continues to make a significant impact, overseeing various nutrition programs, managing staff, and actively participating in research endeavours, primarily conducted at Liverpool Women's Hospital.
