Gavin Koh embarked on his academic journey by earning his degree in Medicine from the University of Cambridge in 2000. Gavin's passion for combating infectious diseases led him to pursue further training in infectious diseases and tropical medicine at institutions such as Birmingham and Oxford.
In 2004, Gavin Koh successfully graduated from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) with a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H). Choosing LSTM was a strategic decision influenced by the school's reputation as the first school of tropical medicine globally. The timing of the course aligned perfectly with Gavin's career aspirations, fitting seamlessly between his Senior House Officer (SHO) positions.
Gavin's career trajectory has been marked by significant contributions to the field of infectious diseases. Notably, he served as the chief investigator for pivotal tafenoquine trials aimed at vivax malaria prophylaxis. His work played a crucial role in supporting the development of the first new medicine for vivax malaria in six decades.
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gavin demonstrated exceptional leadership as he spearheaded the Evusheld program. This initiative resulted in the creation of the only prophylactic antibody combination for COVID-19, specifically designed for immunocompromised patients with suboptimal responses to vaccines. The program is estimated to have saved an impressive 20,000 lives.
Gavin Koh currently holds the position of Executive Director, Clinical Development at Generate:Biomedicines, a biotech start-up based in Boston, United States. In this role, he is at the forefront of leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to revolutionise drug design, accelerate drug discovery, and minimize clinical trial failures.
Gavin attributes much of his success to his education at LSTM. The Liverpool DTM&H provided him with a solid foundation that proved invaluable as he transitioned into the role of an infectious disease’s registrar in Birmingham. This education laid the groundwork for Gavin to pursue impactful research in malaria and tuberculosis. From 2014-2023, Gavin returned to LSTM to deliver lecture on melioidosis to DTM&H students.
Reflecting on his time at LSTM, Gavin advises prospective students to build lasting friendships. He emphasises the intensity of the course but encourages students to work hard and play hard, recognising the importance of balancing both aspects of academic life.
