Catherine Flanigan is a nurse with a passion for providing medical care to those in need, no matter where they are or what the circumstances may be. From working with Médecins Sans Frontières to managing a medical team onboard a Search and Rescue ship in the Mediterranean, Catherine has dedicated her life to helping others and making a positive impact on the world.
Catherine enrolled at LSTM in 2018 where she completed the Diploma of Tropical Nursing. This program provided Catherine with the opportunity to learn from health professionals from all over the world and gain practical knowledge and skills in the field of tropical and infectious diseases. The course also included a short course on Emergency Obstetric and Newborn care, which has been invaluable in her work since leaving LSTM.
Since completing her diploma, Catherine has worked in various countries, including South Sudan, East Timor, and North East Syria, and in a variety of settings, including remote community health posts, hospitals, camps, search and rescue at sea, and detention settings. This diversity of experiences has allowed Catherine to grow both personally and professionally and has given her a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those in need.
One of Catherine's fondest memories from her time at LSTM was meeting nursing colleagues and friends from all over the world who shared her views and interests. The friendships she made during her time at LSTM have continued to support her throughout her career, and she is proud to have maintained these relationships over the years.
When asked for advice for current and prospective students, Catherine encourages them to enjoy their time at LSTM, ask questions, and stay in touch with their classmates. She believes that these relationships will become a supportive network throughout their careers.
In Catherine's opinion, the greatest achievement of LSTM is its hands-on and practical approach to teaching. She credits the school with teaching her practical skills and a way of thinking that she still uses in her work today.
Catherine’s journey is a testament to her dedication and resilience. Her experiences and the relationships she has formed along the way have made her a better nurse and a better person. She continues to work towards making a positive impact on the world and is an inspiration to those around her.
