Ayanna George is a talented medical professional who has been practicing since 2011. Despite her experience, she sought to broaden her knowledge and skills in the field of tropical paediatrics. Her journey to achieve this goal led her to Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).
Ayanna had a clear goal in mind when she set her sights on LSTM: she wanted to pursue a master's degree in tropical paediatrics. However, she faced a significant obstacle. She needed to secure a student visa, which required her to demonstrate that she had sufficient financial resources to support herself during her studies. Despite her best efforts, Ayanna found it challenging to meet this requirement. That's where Ms. Karen Eves, an LSTM staff member, stepped in to help.
Ms. Eves reached out to Ayanna and offered her assistance with the visa application process. From the very beginning, Ms. Eves simplified the process beautifully, offering guidance and support at every step of the way. Ayanna encountered no challenges thanks to Ms. Eves' consistent correspondence. Ayanna was grateful for the support, saying, "Thank you Ms. Eves!"
Ayanna chose LSTM for its combined face-to-face and online programme in paediatrics, which was attractively advertised. The programme met her expectations, and she particularly enjoyed the introductory week of activities, including a walk to the Liverpool Library. Ayanna had always loved paediatric medicine and had been practicing for a long time. Completing a master's degree in tropical paediatrics was the perfect fit for her.
Ayanna was awarded a partial Thomas Mark Scholarship, which helped her meet the financial requirements outlined in the visa application. Without the scholarship, Ayanna would have had to defer her studies or cancel her plans altogether. The scholarship allowed her to pay her tuition and afford decent student accommodation, enabling her to pursue her studies.
Ayanna's studies at LSTM had a significant impact on her skills, confidence, and personal goals. The neonatal course introduced her to impactful topics, which she practices daily. Course materials on malaria, HIV, and pneumonia strengthened her base knowledge in these areas and improved her efficiency while on the job. Ayanna's LSTM education positively impacted her professional and personal interactions, giving her the tools to be a better paediatrician.
If Ayanna were to give advice to prospective students, she would encourage them to approach each course with personal aims and objectives, in addition to the aims and objectives of the course. She believes in studying with purpose, understanding, and critically analysing every piece of information. She also encourages students to enjoy the scenery in Liverpool, which she found beautiful.
Ayanna's studies at LSTM were the steppingstone to her current position as a Junior Paediatric Resident in a Type B hospital in the Caribbean. She sees neonates, infants, and children, working as part of an amazing team to diagnose and manage their conditions. Ayanna's hard work and dedication paid off, and she continues to make a positive impact on the lives of her patients.
Ayanna's journey to LSTM was not without its challenges, but with the support of the institution and a scholarship, she was able to achieve her dreams. Her experience serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the importance of perseverance, dedication, and the value of a good education. LSTM's programme in tropical paediatrics provided her with the tools to become a better paediatrician.
