LSTM will be hosting a debate at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in July that asks the question ‘Will public private product development partnerships win the fight against malaria and neglected tropical diseases?' Calling the Parasite’s Bluff, will be moderated by former ITV and BBC news presenter Peter Sissons, and forms part of the International Business of Health Week, during the summer’s International Festival of Business, in Liverpool.
The event takes place from 5pm to 6.30pm on Wednesday 2ndJuly, and will see representatives from the public and private sector discuss the benefits and constraints of product development partnerships for research; product development and bringing prevention and treatment to the market.
Malaria kills more than one million people each year, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa, with 75% of deaths occurring in children under five. It is a preventable, treatable infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Researchers at LSTM are leading the field in the fight against malaria and the 17 bacterial and parasitic infections currently classified as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by the World Health Organization (WHO), which cause immense human suffering, chronic disability and / or death to over one billion people worldwide.
The speaker for the event is LSTM’s Professor David Molyneux, one of the world’s leading experts in NTDs and winner of this year's Manson Medal. The debaters are: Andy Wright, Vice President Global Health Programmes for GlaxoSmithKline; Dr Pascal Housset, Member of the Executive Committee of Bayer CropScience and Head of Business Operations Unit Environmental Science (Ret.); Rt Hon Stephen O'Brien, MP and Former Chair of the All-Party Group on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases; Professor Janet Hemingway CBE, Director of LSTM and Dr Nick Hamon, CEO Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC).
