Accidental Scientist, Immunologist by Choice

It was a real pleasure to welcome Professor Kondwani Jambo, his colleagues, friends and family to Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for his inspiring inaugural lecture: Accidental Scientist, Immunologist by Choice.

Kondwani’s lecture was a powerful reflection on a remarkable journey, from growing up in Malawi to becoming Professor of Immunology, and on the unexpected moments and people who helped shape that path.

What stood out was not just the story of a career in science, but the wider message behind it: that science has the greatest impact when we invest in people, build strong systems, and create fair opportunities for discovery, especially in places where resources are limited.

His reflections on infectious diseases, the immune system, global health research and the importance of developing the next generation of scientists were thoughtful, generous and deeply inspiring.

A fantastic evening, and a fitting celebration of work that continues to build science, scientists and systems for lasting impact.
