The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) has received national recognition for the Clinical Research Excellence and Training Open Resource (CREATOR), which was named Malawi’s most outstanding construction project by the Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA).
The award was presented during Malawi’s National Construction Day 2026, which celebrated excellence in the construction sector under the theme “People, Quality, and Innovation: Building a Legacy.” The recognition highlights the significance of CREATOR as a landmark investment in health research, specialist medical education, and leadership in Malawi.
Officially opened in 2024, the facility provides spaces for postgraduate training, collaborative clinical research, and a state-of-the-art laboratory. Designed to strengthen research capacity in Malawi and across sub-Saharan Africa, CREATOR provides the space and support for clinicians and scientists to lead research, train others, influence policy, and develop solutions for Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa.
Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) was key to the development of CREATOR, with LSTM’s Estates Team leading on the Management of the building project; working closely with MLW’s other partners, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, The University of Liverpool and Wellcome.
Kevin Stewart Head of Estates at LSTM said, ““This is a fantastic and thoroughly deserved achievement, and a testament to the collaborative approach, shared vision and dedication of everyone involved in delivering the CREATOR building. It is a lasting investment in research, education and healthcare that will leave a legacy not only in Blantyre, but across Malawi for generations to come.”
