Mr David Callaghan

Biography
David Callaghan is a Senior Educational Technologist with more than 15 yearsโ experience in Higher Education. Skilled in educational technology, instructional design, curriculum development, distance learning and e-learning, he is interested in the science behind learning and underpinning pedagogies โ with a focus on higher education.
David has a strong academic background with a first degree in Computer Science (UEA), then PCGE (Lancaster), PGCert, and MA e-learning (Lancaster). He encourages best use of technology enhanced learning by higher education lecturers in areas such as delivery (content), comms (engagement) and assessment (feedback and review). Specific tools include D2Lโs Brightspace VLE, the Panopto video hosting service, and Turnitin. This is achieved via blog posts and guides, course reviews, and delivering continuing professional development sessions. He is an avid user of technology enhanced learning discussion lists and journals for keeping ahead in the profession, networking and sharing best practice. He reviews for ALT and the British Journal of Educational Technology and has written many blog posts.
Research interests
David has an interest in how technology can be used most effectively by staff in their teaching and by students in their learning. He has published on pedagogies (such as action learning) and the international student experience. Current research interests are staff and student attitudes to using AI in teaching and learning and the ethics and efficacy around using AI for summative assessment.
Teaching
Davidโs teaching is focussed on staff development and much of his material is delivered via PowerPoint and interactive videos. He also teaches on the LIGHT programme that facilitates Fellowships of the Advance HE Fellowship scheme.
