Biography

Hugo obtained a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and Microbiology (Universidad del Valle de Guatemala) and an M.Sc. in Medical Biochemistry (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), where he focused on the interaction between kissing bugs and parasites.

He then completed a Ph.D. (The University of Queensland) where he studied mosquito – virus interaction and how miRNAs regulate mosquito physiology. During his first postdoctoral position, he investigated how mosquitoes tolerate viral infections.

Currently at LSTM Hugo works in the MosSI Laboratory, where he is exploring the use of Wolbachia as a control method for pathogens transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes.
