Mr Sam Jones
- Postgraduate Research Associate, Tropical Disease Biology
Biography
Sam Jones completed his BSc in Tropical Disease Biology at the University of Liverpool in 2019 and his honourโs project focussed on identifying intermediate host snails for schistosoma haematobium from Lake Malawi.
Following this he completed a MSc in Tropical Disease Biology at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in 2020. His project was a literature review exploring the effect of climate change on the distribution of schistosomiasis in East Africa.
After his masterโs Sam took a role as Associate Practitioner in the virology labs at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he carried out COVID-19 diagnostics.
Research interests
Sam is now based in Prof. Russell Stothardโs group working on the Hybridisation in UroGenital Schistosomiasis project. This project focuses on hybridisation of parasites that cause urogenital schistosomiasis in Malawi. This project aims to further understand the transmission, epidemiological impacts, and clinical importance of hybrids of schistosoma haematobium in Malawi.
Teaching
Sam assists in the mentoring of bachelor’s and master’s students who choose to undertake research projects within the Stothard group. He also takes part in laboratory training for diagnostic parasitology for the master’s cohort.
