Dr Mohammad Raftari

Biography

Mohammad Raftari completed his PhD in biotechnology and pursued advanced research in molecular biology and infectious disease control. Following his doctoral studies, he spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at Universiti Putra Malaysia, where he worked on cutting-edge projects involving the creation of recombinant organisms. Mohammad then joined Stockholm University as a Researcher in the Department of Molecular Biology, further expanding his expertise in the molecular mechanisms of malaria parasite and vector control. In 2024, he joined the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) as a Senior Researcher in the Department of Vector Biology, where he focuses on developing innovative strategies to block malaria parasite transmission.

Research interests

Mohammad’s research interests focus on infectious disease control through a multidisciplinary approach rooted in molecular biology and genetic engineering. At LSTM, his work centres on identifying novel molecular targets and mechanisms to disrupt the malaria parasite’s life cycle. This includes exploring strategies to genetically modify parasites and vectors to reduce their capacity to transmit the disease, as well as investigating novel bioproducts produced by parasites that influence vector behaviour, which could be used as an innovative strategy to suppress vector populations.
