The CSRI team at LSTM is recruiting for a Research Assistant to perform immunological assessments of antibody-venom protein binding and in vitro venom neutralisation.
The Centre for Snakebite Research and Interventions (CSRI) at LSTM is at the forefront of research to develop the next generation of snakebite therapies. The intent is to develop therapies with unparalleled efficacy, affordability and safety – to substantially and sustainably reduce the high rates of deaths and disability that currently afflict snakebite victims throughout the world.
The CSRI is currently recruiting a Research Assistant (RA) to be part of a substantial, multi-disciplinary research team dedicated to identifying and implementing systems and tools to improve the treatment of tropical snakebite. Working with experts in the field your role will be to help to perform immunological characterisation of plasma/sera from venom-immunised animals to inform the future development of novel recombinant antibodies as candidates for new snakebite treatment and/or diagnostic tools. The specific role includes a requirement to perform immunological assessments of antibody-venom protein binding (e.g. ELISA, western blotting) and in vitro venom neutralisation (e.g. kinetic enzyme assays). This post will also require careful inventorying and storage of biological samples, and close coordination with our Kenyan and USA-based partners at IPR and the International Aids Vaccine Initiative. The post holder will help incorporate the results of this research into the project’s other objectives for delivery as academic publications, clinical and public health guidelines and for teaching the next generation of scientists and clinicians.
It is essential to hold a degree in a relevant field (e.g. biomedical sciences, biochemistry, immunology, etc), while holding a Master’s level qualification (e.g. MSc) is desirable. Prior experience of working within a research laboratory is essential, and this post would particularly suit those candidates with immunology, biochemistry and/or venom biology laboratory experience. The successful individual must also be able to effectively liaise with collaborators and team members from different cultures, and be capable of diligently recording and inventorying biological samples and scientific data.
