Dr Benjamin Koudou has over 14 years’ experience as a researcher malaria and filariasis control specialist and, a laboratory scientist and researcher working in the fields of neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, malaria, and vector management in Africa, particularly focusing on malaria control focused on bed net and indoor residual spraying and elimination of preventive chemotherapy diseases (lymphatic flariasis, onchocerciasis, Schistosomiasis, STH) through mass drug administration. From April 2012 to August 2016, Benjamin support lymphatic filariasis elimination programmes from West African countries (Ghana, Liberia, Burkina Faso and Guinea) in implementation of mass drug administration based on nationwide distribution of Ivermectine and Albendazole. This includes assessment of side effects, assessing the therapeutic coverage of drug distribution and his impact on reduction of microfilaria and assessing the added value of vector control on accelerating LF elimination.
Additionally, Benjamin is highly experienced in capacity development and in establishing quality management system for laboratories. This includes management of laboratory staff for parasitological and entomological surveys and he co-chaired a task force managing through gaps analysis the evaluation and capacity development of laboratories involved in NTD monitoring and evaluation surveys based in Asia and Africa. Benjamin worked during over 10 years in high tech labs at Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel, Switzerland and at LSTM in UK, where he carried out works in molecular biology. This was recognised by World Health Organisation (WHO) who invited Benjamin to write the chapter on NTD laboratories and diagnostic tools of a training manual for district health staff involved in NTD activities. This book was published in October 2016.
Dr Koudou was Principal Investigator and co-Investigator of several research projects focused on control of vector borne diseases and randomized controlled trial targeting lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. An example is AvecNet which is large worldwide EU funded project commencing in February 2011. Benjamin was the PI for in Cote d’Ivoire until October 2012. These activities include testing of new insecticides or formulations in experimental huts and communities and in-depth anthropological surveys to understand the relationship between net usage and biting of resistant malaria vectors. Currently, Dr Koudou is primary supervisor of 1 PhD student registered at LSTM and who defended successful on 17 January 2017. He is second supervisor of 2 PhD studies defended successfully in December 2014 and 10 January 2017, at University of Liverpool and 2 other PhD studies on malaria defended successfully at Basel University in Switzerland in 2013. In Cote d’Ivoire, Dr Koudou is co-supervising 4 PhD students registered in Nangui Abrogoua University, and targeting NTD. In addition, Dr Koudou is involved in teaching on NTD at LSTM and supervise several MSc studies.
Benjamin has over 12 years’ experience in working with tools used for larvae and adult vectors control in malaria endemic countries. This experience was recognized by WHO and editors by inviting him to write two book chapters entitled “Vector control and surveillance for lymphatic filariasis elimination” and “Effects of irrigated rice fields and seasonality on Plasmodium transmission in West Africa, particularly in Cote d’Ivoire”. Additionally Benjamin was invited as several international conferences as invited key note speakers and published close to 50 papers in peer reviewed international journals.
Dr Benjamin Koudou has over 14 years’ experience as a researcher and a senior scientific program manager working on neglected tropical diseases such as filarasis diseases (lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis) including malaria controland, a laboratory scientist focused on capacity strengthening for laboratory staff in Africa and Asia. Recently, he developed skills on implementation randomised controlled trials and pahrmaco-dynamics and pharmaco kinetics studies following Good Laboratory Practices and targeting elimination of lymphatic filariasis through collaborative funded projects with Case Western Reserve University and Washington University at Saint Louis in United States. He lead several urban studies implemented in African cities such as Conakry, Accra and Kano to assess effectivity of LF transmission prior to MDA implementation.
